    Description

Aiming lamps were developed at the end of the Great War in response to requests from the trenches for a means of directing fire at night. The Mk III Aiming Lamp was introduced in the 1930s and was designed to be used with the Aiming Post Mk III and the Mk I Deflection Bar Foresight. This is untested but description is as follows:
The Mk III aiming lamp has a hinged ground spike which folds against the box and is retained by a leather strap. Both are present on this item. The leather strap secures to box as should. Does have some worn areas and indentations but no significant damage and holds hinge as should. The hinge folds in and out nicely. There is some surface rust present in areas on it.
The lamp is a proprietary electric cycle lamp, an amber celluloid disc being supplied to diffuse the light when necessary. The lamp seems to be in really nice condition although I’m not an expert so please see photos. The glass is in tact and inside is nice and rust free. The copper colored pieces on the back of the lamp do show tarnishing. Embossed marking is as shown, with a bit of rust on that area. Still has clamp and butterfly nut. All in all, nice original lamp. The disc is also present. It does have a discolored spot and surface scratches but it’s undamaged otherwise.
Unlike the Mark II, the box is left with the aiming post when in use, the lamp being operated by means of a 30 yards length of plaited fishing line. (Not included). The box is in pretty nice condition. Opens and closes and secured with a wooden dowel pin like piece original to item. Has a nice brass like plate for label and a stamp as pictured. Surface scratches and some dings throughout on the box but no major damage. All flathead screws are present.
The line is connected to a switch rod which operates a ceiling type switch in the box which, in turn, is connected by flexible leads to the battery and lamp. The switch seems to operate as should. When pulled, it has a click sound for on and off like a fan. The leads do show some wear and may need some restoration. The paper batteries are included but are unusable. For display only, they show apparent corrosion. Three included.
A steel chain 30 in. long has one end secured to an eye in the box, the other end having a spring hook. The chain can be used for anchoring the box to any convenient post or object if the nature of the ground does not permit of the use of the ground spike. This entire piece is included and in tact. Shows rust towards the canter, but all in all the chain is in pretty nice condition.
The Aiming Post is not included. Only what’s in pictures is what you will receive. Please see all pictures for your own visual opinion on this item. Shipped fast and well packed in as pictured condition.
