    Description

Here's an authentic Pernod Fils Absinthe bottle that we show being dug from the ground in our Jug Dump in one of our most recent "Digger Dave & Shovelin Shelley Beeler" Youtube dig videos.   I will describe this interesting historical bottle first and then give a detailed history of absinthe, the Pernod family, etc.
    The bottle is embossed
    PERNOD FILS
bold emb with 2 tiny stars inside a crude separately applied circular blob of glass on the shoulder.....
hand blown in paste mold so there are no mold seams....deep base kickup....hand tooled cork top ring collar....pretty olive green....12"tall.....Excellent condition with no chips or damage. A dug bottle with some light haze. Still has a slight vestige of the neck wrapper. This bottle contained a very powerful liquor called ABSINTHE, which was a licorice flavored drink containing a very high level of alcohol, (usually around 68% alcohol, or 136 proof!). Compare that to modern Jack Daniels whiskey or other hard liquors which are only 40% alcohol, or 80 proof). Pernod Absinthe contained another even more potent ingredient, a European herb called wormwood, (artimisia absinthium), from which it got it's name. The flowers and leaves of wormwood contain the chemical thujone, which many claim has a mind altering, physchoactive effect. In the late 1700's, a French physician named Pierre Ordinaire came up with a medicine called "Absinthe Elixir" in Switzerland. After he
died in 1797, Major Dubied purchased his recipe and set up the first absinthe distillery in COUVET, Switzerland. Dubied's daughter married Henri-Louis PERNOD, who in 1805 started the Pernod Fils distillery in Pontarlier, France. Pernod's youngest son, Louis, built a second factory which was producing 20,000 liters of absinthe per day by the mid 1850s. Pernod Absinthe was far and away the most popular absinthe in the world throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s. Pernod Absinthe became very popular in New Orleans at cafes and bars in the old French Quarter. The Old Absinthe House is still located on the corner of Bourbon & Bienville Streets. This famous drinking bar was frequented in the 1800s by many famous people including Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Walt Whitman, Confederate General P.T.Beauregard, etc. Traditionally, absinthe was prepared by pouring a small amount in a glass. Then cold water was poured over a cube of sugar sitting on a special slotted Absinthe spoon that lay across the rim of the glass. The sugar and water helped to mask the bitterness of wormwood in the green absinthe. Pernod Absinthe was the most popular brand of absinthe in France during the 1800's, especially among the artists and writers. Edouard Manet, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe. Pablo Picasso painted the drink in his famous painting called "Glass and Bottle". Vincent Van Gogh drank absinthe and also painted a picture with absinthe as the subject. Absinthe became illegal in the United States after July 25, 1912, long before Prohibition. Only in the last few years has it became legal again in the U.S.....
